Fire reported at third storey of Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport

A fire has been reported at the third storey of Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Ten firefighting units are working to douse the fire that started around noon on Friday, said Fire Service Control Room official Mizanur Rahman.

The airport's third storey houses the offices of Air India and Saudia, said a duty officer of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn), reports bdnews24.com.

Electricity supply to the airport has been cut off. Employees and passengers being evacuated from the various floors have reported seeing smoke inside the building.

"We are not sure where the fire started. There are various accounts. But there is a lot of smoke here," said Rasheda Sultana, the airport's chief security officer.

Departures were suspended as people arriving for their flights were being barred from entering the airport, she said.

The fire at Bangladesh's main airport is expected to hamper flights for hajj pilgrims.

The display screen of the airport's auto fire detector showed the text - "Fire on Air India floor" - as soon as the fire alarm went off around 1:30pm, said an airline employee.

The flight schedule for Friday on the airport's website showed a Bangladesh Biman flight scheduled to leave for Saudi Arabia's Jeddah at 1:25pm.

Three more by Thai Airways, China Eastern and Hong Kong Airlines were scheduled to leave Dhaka by 3:05pm. Their departure time on the website were still unchanged.

There are no immediate reports of casualties.
