Telecos add 9.5m mobile subscribers, 6.7m internet users in six months

FE Report

The telecom industry saw a huge growth over the period of last six months adding 9.5 million mobile subscribers and 6.7 millions internet subscribers.

The previous six months witnessed a negative growth due to, what the sources concerned said, biometric registration drive.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) revealed the statistics on Thursday.

The telecom industry lost 2.5 million subscribers during July-December in 2016, but the registration drive did not hit the internet subscribers that much as the number of subscribers increased 2.7 million during the same period.

Biometric re-registration began in December 2015 and ended in May last year.

At present, the number of internet connection stands at 73.4 million.

Newly-merged Robi and Airtel added the highest number of customers - a whopping 5.7 millions who helped reach their existing subscriber base to 39.6 million during the first six months of this year.

When contacted, Ekram Kabir, a Corporate Communications and Corporate Responsibility department official of Robi, said the company's strong performance in the market is a true testimony to the success of the biggest ever merger in the country's history.

"In the post-merger scenario, our stronger network continues to drive transformative growth for us. And the results demonstrate the power of our brand, illustrate our potential to drive long-term growth and provide evidence that we are effectively executing integrated network for the benefit of our subscribers."

Market leader Grameenpone added 3.6 million subscribers - thereby widening their service coverage to 61.6 million, the BTRC report read.

Banglalink is now the country's third largest operator with 31.5 million subscriber base. It added 5.6 million new customers in the first half of this year.

All the private mobile operators got positive feedback from the market in first half, excepting state-run Teletalk, who lost 3,73,000 subscribers and were left with a 3.2 million customer base.
