Use of polythene and plastic bottles must be banned

USE of polythene and plastic bottles has been rampant all over the country because of their low cost. But people in general hardly take into account their impact on human life and environment. Polythene and plastic bottles are made of synthetic substances which do not decompose in the soil and remain intact for a hundred year or even more.

It has turned out to be a menace for urban life. Very recently we have been experiencing water-logging particularly in Dhaka and Chittagong due to extensive use and indiscriminate littering of polythene and plastic bottles. The drainage systems of these cities are choked by discarded polythene and plastic bottles. There are specific laws in the country that prohibit use of polythene. But the laws are being flouted mainly due to inaction of the government to enforce order and discipline in the sector. As a result, use of polythene is increasing at an alarming rate. The concerned agencies of the government must ensure proper enforcement of the law and if necessary the law should be amended to suit our requirement.  Mobile courts should be formed and massive awareness campaigns should be carried out in both electronic and print media to project the damaging effects of polythene.
