NBR forms committee to settle VAT disputes with mobile operators

National Board of Revenue (NBR) Wednesday formed a tripartite committee to expedite settlement of long-pending VAT-related disputes involving Tk 51.71 billion.

It asked the high-powered committee to submit its recommendations for resolving the disputes among the NBR, mobile operators and Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).

Of the total amount, the VAT wing demanded Tk 44.05 billion in five cases from the country's mobile phone companies.

The VAT department also demanded Tk 7.66 billion from the BTRC in arrear VAT.

Most of the disputes remain under process in the courts, including the Appellate Division and the NBR's VAT tribunal.

The committee consists of representatives from the Association of Mobile Telephone Operators of Bangladesh, BTRC, Large Taxpayers Unit (VAT) of NBR and Barrister Tanjib-ul-Alam.

The committee was formed at a meeting of high officials of the NBR, BTRC and mobile operators at the NBR premises, chaired by senior secretary of the Internal Resources Division (IRD) and NBR chairman Md Nojibur Rahman.

SIM replacement tax in two phases worth Tk 20.48 billion and Tk 8.83 billion respectively is a long-pending dispute between the NBR and mobile phone operators.

The other disputes included interest on SIM tax, VAT on commercial rent and illegal rebate, VAT deduction at source on revenue sharing, VAT on merger fee of Robi and Airtel, VAT on 3G license fee of Teletalk and VAT on annual license fee, license acquisition fee of BTCL etc.
