Shankordaho pry school in Rangpur under threat of Teesta erosion

RANGPUR, Aug 10: Erosion by the Teesta river has posed serious threat to   Shankordaho Government Primary School at Lakkhitari union of Gangachara upazila in Rangpur district during last one week.  

Sources said the school was established in 1995. Around 148 students and 5 teachers of the institution are passing days amid deep concern as it is now under the threat of extinction.

Expressing apprehension Azizul Islam, acting headmaster of the primary school said they are much worried about the fate of the institution. As presently the school is in real danger of being eroded. He said the school building was around half kilometer away from the river last year but presently it is only around 10 to 12 feet away from the river. If the erosion continues for few more days, the entire school building might be disappeared into the river soon, he further said.

The locals are trying to prevent erosion by dumping sand bags but despite these efforts erosion is continuing, he further said.

Locals said that the school was far away from the river few years ago but due to massive erosion it has come so closer to the river during last couple of years. A major portion of the educational institution may go under water very soon, they apprehended.

Some of the students including Aklima Khatun and Morshed Ali of class five of the institution said their school may go under water within few days. They are not sure whether they will be able to continue their study or not.

Sub Assistant Engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), Rangpur, Mahmud Ahmed said that they are trying their level best to combat the adverse situation. Sand bags are being dumped to protect the institution from erosion, he added.
