Speakers for planting more saplings in open spaces

SYLHET, Aug 10: Speakers at an event in the divisional town on Thursday laid emphasis on making the tree plantation drive a mass participating one for protecting the environment.

They were speaking in a tree fair organised jointly by the Department of Forests and the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) on the premises of the Government Aliah Madrasah ground.

Divisional Commissioner Nazmanara Khanum attended the programme as the chief guest. She said tree fair is being organised at district, division and upazila levels at times and there had been a good success all over the country. She said, "We need more and planned tree plantation since the forestry area remained far behind as yet."

She also called upon the students to plant tree saplings in open spaces.

Deputy Commissioner Md Rahat Sylhet, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Golam Kibria, Divisional Forest Officer RSM Monirul Islam and DAE Deputy Director Md Abul Hashim were, among others, present on the occasion.

Our Naogaon correspondent adds: A five-day fruit tree fair began at Manda upazila council premises in the district on Wednesday.

The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and Manda upazila administration are jointly arranged the fair with the theme "We want health, nutrition and money, we plant indigenous fruit tree."

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Nuruzzaman inaugurated the tree fair as the chief guest.

Owners of private nurseries, agri-departments and entrepreneurs set up 20 stalls in the fair to showcase around 60 varieties of fruit-bearing saplings.

Upazila agriculture officer Jahangir Alam Pramanik, DAE officer Zahidur Rahman, upazila project implementation officer Rezaul Karim, upazila food controller Aminul Islam and Manda upazila chairman Abdur Rashid spoke at the inaugural ceremony.

Speakers laid emphasis on boosting production of all varieties of fruits to meet nutrition demand of the common people side by side achieving economic self-reliance.

They asked the farmers and commoners for increasing production of high-valued, hybrid and developed varieties of fruits though cultivating those in their orchards as well as in the homesteads to achieve the goals.
