Customs seizes Tk2.7m cigarettes at HSIA

FE Report

Customs Intelligence (CI) on Wednesday seized a large number of contraband cigarettes worth Tk2.7 million from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in the capital.

The CI seized 90,000 cigarettes around 12:00 pm from a flight of Sri Lankan Airlines.

Assistant Commissioner of Dhaka Customs House AHM Ahsanul Kabir told the FE that the cigarettes were found in an abandoned condition.

He said based on secret information, the CI kept a special watch on the green channel of the airport.

"The passenger could sense the surveillance of the CI and fled leaving the cigarettes," he said.

Ahsanul Kabir said later three bags were recovered in an abandoned condition, inside which the cigarettes were found in 450 cartons.

He said the seized cigarettes were of US 303 brand.

According to the import policy, there must be anti-smoking warning marks in the cigarette packs but there were no such signs there. Legal actions are being taken against the consignee of the cigarettes, he said.
