Index, turnover slightly down on DSE

Dhaka bourse Wednesday closed marginally lower extending losing streak for second session.

On the day, the broad index and turnover declined slightly amid some investors' watchful stance and mixed performance displayed by major sectors.

The market started the session with a positive note and the DSE broad index DSEX touched 5900 point-mark after one hour of the session.

Later, the market observed volatility and DSEX closed the session below 5900 point, with a marginal loss.

Index, turnover slightly down on DSEAt the end of the session, the DSEX rose 0.12 per cent or 7.54 points to close at 5890.12 points.

The shariah based index DSES rose 0.14 per cent to close at 1311.25 points, while the blue chip index DS30 closed at 2121.21 points with a rise of 1.56 points.

Of 329 issues traded, 115 advanced, 186 declined and 28 were unchanged on the premier bourse DSE.

The turnover stood at above Tk 8.66 billion which was 8.0 per cent less than the turnover of previous session.

Of total turnover, Tk 7.31 billion came from transactions of 'A' category securities.

According to International Leasing Securities, the stock market witnessed another downbeat session amid choppy trading as the investors' bagged profits on bank sectors stocks.

It said the market started with optimistic tune as investors continued their buying spree to take positions in sector-specific stocks but the profit booking tendency of risk-averse investors pushed down the market in the later part of the session.

"Selling of shares mostly from life insurance, mutual fund and bank sectors contributed to the fall in indices," said the International Leasing Securities.

Among the major sectors based on market capitalisation, bank declined 1.0 per cent.

Among the gaining sectors, engineering advanced 0.90 per cent, financial institutions 0.6 per cent, fuel & power 0.1 per cent, pharmaceuticals & chemicals 0.2 per cent, telecommunication 0.1 per cent and textile 0.3 per cent.

 Investors' concentration was concentrated mostly on textile sector which grabbed 19.50 per cent of market turnover followed by bank 19.10 per cent, engineering 14.90 per cent and pharmaceuticals & chemicals 8.60 per cent.

Generation Next Fashions topped the turnover chart with a value of Tk 367 million followed by C & A Textile Tk 355 million, IFAD Autos Tk 326, BBS Cables Tk 297 million and Confidence Cement Tk 235 million.

BD Autocars was the number one gainer with a rise 9.65 per cent to close at Tk 113.60 per share, while National Life Insurance Company was the worst company after declining 12.33 per cent to close at Tk 162.10.

On Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), all indices declined along with a loss observed in turnover.

The benchmark index CASPI lost 35 points and closed at 18267 points.

Of 264 issues traded, 89 advanced, 151 advanced and 24 were unchanged and the turnover stood at above Tk 527.54 million on the port city bourse CSE.
