All nine bailey bridges in poor state in Sunamganj

SYLHET, Aug 09: All the nine bailey bridges on the Sunamganj-Jogonnathpur Road are in a poor state due to absence of repair and regular maintenance. The vehicles of all types have to ply through busy road amid risks.

Official sources at the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) said the 21 km road has a total of 16 bridges including nine bailey bridges. They admitted all these are of poor condition for long.

Plying of vehicles had gone up recently on the road with the start of ferry service at Raniganj area over the river Kushiyara. The road reduces the journey time to Dhaka by an hour, the official and locals said.

These bridges are at Aktapara, Dargapasha, Bombomi Bazar, Bhatgaon, Kundanala, Goyashpur, Kolkoli, Khasila and Mazidpur.

An official of RHD said, "We already sent a proposal for construction of concrete bridge in place of seven bailey bridges at points. If approved we would soon construct new bridges."
