Hectic jute harvest going on in full swing across Rangpur region

Our Correspondent

RANGPUR, Aug 09: Jute harvest is going on in full swing across Rangpur agriculture region.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur, sources said jute was cultivated on around 63,600 hectares of land this season in five districts -Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat - of the zone.

Visiting some jute fields in different areas under the region, this correspondent found the farmers and farm labourers passing busy time reaping and gathering their hard-produced crop from morning to evening.

Presently the crop is being sold at Tk 1,350 to Tk 1,450 per maund which is not satisfactory to the growers. Farmers also expressed the hope that its price would go up within the next one or two months. Many farmers are yet to sell their produce to get more profit later.

Ashraful Mia, a farmer at Char Nazirdaho village under Kawnia upazila in Rangpur, told The Financial Express that he brought one bigha of land under   cultivation of jute this season, spending around Tk 10,000. He said if price rises further they would be benefited.

Asadul, another farmer of Mirzapur village of Mithapukur upazila in Rangpur said he cultivated jute on one acre of land this year and got satisfactory production. He is also expecting good profit from its sale in market.

A number of farmers said this year due to adequate rainfall they could save irrigation cost. Generally, its farming requires less irrigation than that of paddy they added. But growers expressed their disappointment over high labour cost as they have to pay Tk 500 for per labourer which is much higher, they alleged.

DAE official sources said the department provided the farmers with logistic support including necessary agri-inputs during the time of cultivation in order to enhance jute production. The department is also trying to make the ribbon retting method, a technology for rotting jute plants popular among the farmers by providing necessary training, equipments, sources added.
