Quintuplets, rare white lion, born in Czech zoo

For the critically endangered white lion, the quintuplets that were recently born in a Czech zoo are a vital contribution for their survival, according to a global media report.

Quintuplets are an extreme rarity for white lions.

Their May 4 birth was a surprise and shouldered the zoo keepers with “a huge responsibility” as zoo director Viktor Ambroz stressed.

But constant care paid off and today all five - male Mesfin (King) and four females, Asmara (Justice), Dabe (Health), Dunia (Life) and Congit (Beauty) - are in good shape.

Under the watchful eyes of their parents, seven-year-old Tia and six-year-old Agi, they form what Mr Ambroz calls “a great family”.

White lions are a genetic rarity that come from South Africa’s Timbavati and Kruger regions. Less than 13 are estimated to live in the wild, while 300 are in captivity.
