Banking sector grabs 40.50pc of mkt turnover

Investors' concentration mostly on banking sector Monday helped the premier bourse close higher with a hefty turnover.

On the day, losers took control over gainers but at the end of the session the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) witnessed moderate rise as large cap companies including banks went green.

Banking sector solely grabbed 40.50 per cent of the market turnover.

Turnover and broad index witnessed moderate rise extending the gaining streak for second session in a row.

The market started the session positively and the DSE broad index DSEX displayed a sharp rise for twenty minutes.

Soon later, the DSEX declined for a while and ended the rest of the rest of the session through ups and downs.

At the end of the session, the DSEX closed at 5913.59 points with a rise of 0.10 per cent or 5.97 points.

The shariah based index DSES declined 0.03 per cent or 4.0 points to close at 1309.11 points, while the blue chip index DS30 closed at 2125.07 points with a loss of 0.23 per cent or 4.99 points.

According to International Leasing Securities, the investors were rebalancing their portfolios with the stocks of banking sector following their positive quarterly earnings disclosures.

"Optimistic investors showed their buying appetite on the banking issues that helped the prime index to remain in green," said the International Securities.

The turnover stood at above Tk 11.87 billion which is 29 per cent higher than the turnover of the previous session.

Of total turnover, Tk 10 billion came from transactions of 'A' category shares.

Of 331 issues traded, 102 advanced, 202 declined and 27 were unchanged on the premier bourse DSE.

Among the major sectors based on market capitalisation, bank rose bank rose 1.30 per cent, engineering 0.2 per cent, financial institutions 0.2 per cent and services & real estate 1.70 per cent.

Among the declining sectors, fuel & power lost 0.3 per cent, pharmaceuticals & chemicals 0.5 per cent, tannery 1.0 per cent, telecommunication 0.4 per cent and textile 0.7 per cent.

Engineering sector grabbed 10.10 per cent of the market turnover followed by textile 9.90 per cent and pharmaceuticals & chemicals 6.60 per cent.

On the port city CSE, the benchmark index CASPI gained 23 points to close at 18347 points.

Of 265 issues traded, 95 advanced, 149 declined and 21 were unchanged and the turnover stood at above Tk 684.62 million on the port city bourse CSE.
