RAJSHAHI, Aug 07: There has been a bright prospect of groundnut production in char villages of Bagha upazila.  Farmers of Char villages this year have cultivated groundnut in 50 hectares of land and hoping for a bumper production of it due to a favourable climatic condition.  

Bagha upazila Agriculture office sources informed a target of cultivating groundnut on 45 hectares of land was taken up this year but the farmers have cultivated the same on 50 hectares, five hectares of more area. Some farmers also cultivated a high yield variety, a three seeded-nut in their fields. The lands of char villages of Dadpur, Palassey, Palassey-Fatehpur, Nich Palassey, Kalidaskhali, Chalkrajapur, Bimanpara, Choumadia, Tiktikipara, Diarkadirpur, Kadirpur, Manikchar and in Temadiachar under Chalkrajpur union of Bagha upazila have been brought under such groundnut production. Farmers of those villages informed, the charland of the villages were not inaundated this year by the seasonal rain fall or by flooding of the river. That is why they were expecting a good harvest of groundnut. Several hundred farmers of char villages including Aslam Hossain, Mujibur Rahman, Shafiqul Islam, Salah Uddin, Shahidul Islam, Fazlu member, Adbul Awal, Idris Ali, Jalal Uddin, Jahurul and Barek have cultivated groundnut in their field this year. They are hoping a good yield of the crop.

Ground nut farmer Fazlu member said he has cultivated the crop in eight bighas of land this year. He took care of his field according to the direction of the officials of DAE and there was no pest attack in his field.

Another farmer Shahidul Mollah said seven to eight maunds of groundnut can be produced in a bigha of sandy charland. The present market price of the crop is Tk 2500 to Tk 3000 per maund. Production cost is less than that of other crops, he added.

Idria Ali, Jalal Uddin and Barek Mollah of Chalkrajapur village have jointly cultivated groundnut in 50 bighas of land. They have spent Taka 250,000 for the purpose of cultivation. They were expecting to harvest 600 maunds of groundnut from their field and if the market price remained static, they were hoping to sell their harvest at least Tk 1.5 million.  

Aslam Uddin of Chalkrajapur village informed there was no pest attack in the groundnut field this year and they were expecting a bumper production of groundnut from the charlands.

Azizul Azam, chairman of Chalkrajapur union informed, not only groundnut but also various types of crops and vegetables including egg-plant, potato, pointed gourd, paddy, wheat and mustard are produced in char villages. The production of various crops per hectares of land in char land is greater than that of plain land.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Sabina Begum informed, groundnut has been cultivated in 50 hectares of land in char villages. Due to favourable climatic condition, farmers were able to take care of their crop timely. She was expecting a bumper production of improved and high yield variety of groundnut in char land of Bagha this year.
