Ishwardi farmers become self-reliant growing off-season bean

Roving Correspondent

PABNA, Aug 06: Hundreds of poor peasants of Iswardi upazila in Pabna are becoming self-reliant by growing off-season bean.

Farmers and others concerned, including agriculturists, were very much optimistic about the overall bumper production of the vegetable for prevailing favourable weather. Farmers are also happy over the price as they already have started harvesting the item from the last week of July.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office source, the poor and marginal farmers of the different villages under the upazila had grown the bean variety on 1400 hectares of land on experiment basis last year and made a massive profit. They have taken some 1600 hectares of land against the target of 1450 hectares fixed by the DAE in the upazila, DAE added.

Over 2,000 farmers are engaged in farming the newly-innovated bean variety, said farmer Nazrul Islam, 45, of Muladuli village. They are promoting modern technology and using high yielding bean seeds to reduce dependency on crops import to meet the internal demand, he added.

While visiting, the correspondent found that the farmers of the upazila have shown more confident in growing the vegetable due to more profit. Each maund of the crop is being sold at Tk 4,000 to Tk 4,200 in the retail market while Tk 3,600 to Tk 3,800 in the wholesale market.

"I have brought around 34 decimal of land under auto bean cultivation spending Tk 2500 for getting financial solvency in this season," said farmer Babu, 34, at Muladuli village under the upazila. He again said, "I have sold 23 kg of the crops with Tk 2000 and rest of the bean may be sold for Tk 12,000."

Upazila agriculture officer Rawshan Jamal said, "We are trying to popularise the cultivation of the bean variety in the area. This variety is profitable as the cultivators get good production and market price of the vegetable", he added.
