Illegal enclosures set up in Manas river to catch fish

Our Correspondent

RANGPUR, Aug 06: Illegal enclosures have been set up from Gajghanta area of Gangachara upazila to Balarghat area under Kawnia upazila in Rangpur for catching fish in Manas river.

According to sources a good number of  unscrupulous people of Gangachara and Kawnia upazila have illegally put enclosures with bamboo fences in more than 30 places across 5 kilometers under the upazilas in order to catch  fishes in the river, but the authority concerned are yet to take any steps in this regard.

Due to the bamboo enclosures, smooth flow of water in the river under the areas is seriously being hindered. Local agriculture is also hampered owing to massive water logging in the vast open water body, sources alleged.

Locals alleged that some influential people have been catching fish illegally in the river for one month. Everyday a huge amount of fishes are being trapped in the net which is put in the bamboo fence. Due to bamboo fence natural flow of the river is also being obstructed, they said.

Mokarrom Hossain, a resident of Gajghanta village of Gangachara upazila said earlier he earned his livelihood by fishing in the river. He said that he recently began working as a day labourer as real fishermen are not allowed to catch fish there following occupation of the river by some dishonest people.

Locals alleged that due to enclosures movement of boat has also been obstructed across the river. Earlier, people of the areas used boat for crossing the river, they said.

Some locals of the areas said that very often they get injured due to hidden bamboo pole of the enclosures when they take bath in the river.

District Fishery Officer Zillur Rahman said putting fence on any portion of river is forbidden by law. Officials concerned will visit the area soon and ask the illegal occupiers to remove the fences. If the fences are not removed within a day or two, they will take stern action against the illegal occupiers.
