The wailing roads of Dhaka

ROADS of Dhaka are crying in pain and grief or anger as sufferings from torrential rains have kept on mounting. People of Dhaka have discovered themselves in a new identity where the roads that used to serve them in so many ways have turned into death traps. Rain water seems to be trapped within the warped roads of the city for eternity, and is a constant threat to people with open manholes and broken road surfaces. Of the many problems that have bedeviled the city, water-logging and traffic jam have assumed intolerable limits. The drainage system in the capital is dysfunctional due to clogging of the drains. No sustainable initiative has been taken to address the water-logging problem in the city. Another menace is the digging and re-digging of city roads without any rhyme or reason. What is surprising is that various utility service providers do this job during monsoon, bringing additional sufferings for the people. This is sheer wastage of the state money.

People expected a lot after the two city mayors took over. It is the responsibility of the mayors to address the problems of the city-dwellers pragmatically. Mere utterance of rhetoric will not serve the purpose, those should be translated into action for the welfare of the taxpayers.
