Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Islamic University (IU) chapter has suspended one of its activists for assaulting a journalist on the campus in the southwestern district of Kushtia.

BCL’s IU unit President Shahinur Rahman Shahin and General Secretary Jewel Rana Halim announced the disciplinary action in a press release on Friday night.

The suspended activist is Mithu Kabir, a masters’ student of information and communication engineering department of the university.

Witnesses said Kabir along with others assaulted Shah Alam, who reports for The Independent from the campus, at Sheikh Parha Bazar adjacent to the university over previous enmity around 7:30pm.

The assault sparked anger among the members of the Islamic University Press Club and the Islamic University Journalists’ Association.

They demanded permanent expulsion of the BCL activists involved in the attack. Otherwise, the association threatened to boycott all the news of the university.
