Roadside parking

I was looking at a picture in the online news portal about illegal parking which said it is one of the major reasons for severe traffic gridlock in Dhaka. As no effective steps are being taken against illegal parking, it is going on unabated. Even diplomatic zone like Gulshan and Baridhara are not immune from the menace of haphazard illegal parking. We see cars being parked on the pavement and blocking it completely for the pedestrians. We often see traffic sergeants towing this illegally parked car but the situation is not improving.

Our roads are not much wider and due to indiscriminate and haphazard parking on the road, it is becoming even narrower and halting the traffic movement and creating huge gridlock throughout the day causing immense sufferings to the commuters.

I went to New Market a few days ago. It was a Friday, a weekly holiday and I found many private cars were parked along the road and traffic police were frantically trying to remove those. The shoppers were suffering due to unbearable summer heat on the one hand and traffic congestion on the other.

If the present situation is not improved we shall see more serious traffic jams in the coming days as more shoppers are expected to rush for shopping before Eid Ul Azha. I hope the concerned authorities will take steps to solve this problem of illegal roadside parking and bring back order particularly in and around the neighbouring areas of some market places.
