Natural cold storage reduces preserving cost of potato in Joypurhat

Roving Correspondent

JOYPURHAT, Aug 1: Natural cold storage is reducing preserving cost of potato compared to artificial cold storage in all five upazilas of Joypurhat district from last decade.

According to Social Ahead Organisation (SAO) the farmers of the region have set around 40 natural cold storages to preserve the potato in cheap rate as the service charge of the artificial cold storage is unbearable for the poor and marginal peasants. The farmers are saving Tk 400 to 500 for each sack of potato setting up the natural cold storage, SAO official added.

In a recent visit this correspondent found the farmers have started selling of potato from the natural cold storage as it is easy to discharge the crops than the artificial cold storage. The peasants are seen in happy mood during the time of selling the crops.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) source said, potato growers of the district had brought some 50,000 hectares of land under the crop cultivation and achieved 2,43,800 tonnes of yield. Considering the expensive cost, the farmers had taken logistic support from local agriculture office to keep the potato, DAE added.

A farmer Matiur Rahman, 34, at Tarakul village under Khetlal upazila said, he got 300 maund of granula potato variety from his four bighas of land and he took them in his natural cold storage. He will set a new natural cold storage coming year as it is proved to him more lucrative, he added.

"I have made a natural cold storage spending Tk 25,000 with straw and bamboo aiming reducing preserving cost in this season," said Abdul Momin, 45, at Nischintapur village under the upazila. He again said, "I kept around 400 maund of potato and saved Tk 80,000 as I spend Tk 300 for each sacks."

Convener of SAO Mozaffor Hossain said, "Natural cold storage is gaining momentum amid the farmers of the district gradually as is save Tk 400 to 450 for each sacks of potato. We manage raw materials of the cold storage for setting up easily round the clock," he added.
