Locals demand dredging of silted rivers, removal of unplanned Burikiary embankment

SYLHET, Aug 1: The locals demanded immediate steps for removal of the much-talked about Burikiary embankment and for dredging of all the rivers for resolving the prolonged floods in Moulvibazar and Sylhet districts, especially on the country's largest waterbody 'Hakaluki haor' areas.

Locals' forum 'Haor Banchao-Krishak Banchao Sangram Parishad' and JSD men joined the human chain and protest rally, held at Kulaura upazila town's station Choumohona area on Monday.

The speakers at the rally said the unplanned Buirikiary embankment had already caused huge loss for the farmers of the region for the last few years due to early floods.

The demand was raised on several occasions, but there had been no repsonse from the authority as yet, the speakers said. "We would be compelled to launch larger agitation for saving our crops on and the neighbouring areas of Hakaluki haor.

The vast waterbody spreads over Barlekha, Kulaura and Juri upazilas of Moulvibazar and Fenchuganj and Golapganj upazilas of Golapganj in Sylhet district. Crop lands go inundated as the rain waters can't roll down due to the Burikiary embankment," they alleged.

On the other hand, all the riverbeds on the region had already been silted up, causing much for passing down of the excess water from the croplands.

The speakers added, all these result in the prolonged floods for the last few years. 'Haor banchao, Krishak Banchao Sangram Parishad' central General Secretary Haji Alauddin and others addressed the hour-long protest rally during the human chain.
