Uninterrupted power supply a must: Nasrul

Defends energy subsidies
FE Report
Uninterrupted electricity supply must be ensured and the quality of consumer services must be improved, a government minister told power officials Saturday.

State Minister for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid asked the state-owned power entities, especially the Rural Electrification Board (REB), to go all out to ensure better services to the consumers.

Speaking at a general managers' conference of the REB at its headquarters in the city, Mr Hamid said the power entity should not consider its service from 'businesses angle' as it was established to ensure better electricity supply to grassroots people.

The government is providing subsidy to power sector as people's purchasing power did not reach the expected level, the minister noted.

Life-line tariff has been introduced for the betterment of the people, he said.

Mr Hamid also called for bringing down electricity system loss by at least 1.0 per cent every year, which he said would save around Tk 1.50 billion annually.

REB chairman Major-General Moin Uddin said REB's existing system loss is 11.44 per cent and around 72 per cent of the people in REB command area have electricity access.

"Currently, the number of REB consumers is around 19.2 million, which would reach 20 million soon," he told the meet.

Sixteen of the country's upazilas have been brought under cent-percent electrification, which would increase to 162 by December 2017 and 248 by December 2018, said the REB top official.

He said due to system overloading around 108 megawatts of electricity is forced load-shed in areas under 18 Palli Bidyut Samittees (PBSs).

Around 50,000 kilometres of new electricity lines, 80 substations and 4.0 million consumers would be added to the REB net within this fiscal year (FY), 2017-18, he added.
