Marginal growers attain solvency through commercial banana cultivation in Bogra

BOGRA, July 15:  Hundreds of poor and marginal banana growers of Bogra district have attained solvency through commercial cultivation of the crops in this current season due to its good market price.

The people who struggle with heinous miseries condition five year back have now become able to drive the curse of darkness by cultivating the fruits item round the year, said beneficiary Fazlul Haque under Shibganj upazila of the district. Besides, banana cultivation shows the brighter future among the hard up people, he added.

"I have cultivated the Malbhog variety banana in my five bighas of fallow land spending Tk 25,000 last year borrowing some Tk 15,000 from Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) and I have started harvesting of the crops from last June." said farmer Belal Hossain under Kahaloo upazila.

Farmer Suzaul Karim, 45, under sadar upazila said, he saw his neighbour was growing bananas and making huge profit every season and he become inspired from the success. He took 34 decimal of land under banana cultivation last year and he made Tk 30,000 this year. The living standard has improved a lot since the farmers started growing bananas commercially a few years ago.

In a recent visit the correspondent found each acre can support up to 1,000 healthy banana trees that each produce as many as 150 bananas per annum. The farmers spend around Tk 40 to 50 on each tree, earning about Tk 300 from the bananas it produces. The farmers are also in smiling face as the production and market price is satisfactory due to favourable weather condition.

Planting season for bananas occurs twice a year. The plant enterprise begins from March to May and then again from September to November. Each healthy banana tree start to produce fruit approximately fourteen months after planting, the weather condition remains favourable.

Banana trader Hussain, 55, at Mokamtola bazar says he purchases four maunds of green bananas for Tk 6,500 and will sell them for Tk 8,000. After satisfying local demand we send huge quantities of bananas to the capital and other parts of the country, he added.

According to Department Agriculture Extension office source farmers of the region have brought over 2,300 hectares of land under different variety banana cultivation.
