Half a million workers get jobs abroad in last six months

FE Report
More than half a million workers went abroad with jobs in the last six months of the current calendar year mainly due to significant recruitment of manpower by Saudi Arabia, official figures revealed.

According to the Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET), some 520,490 Bangladeshi workers secured jobs overseas in the January-June period of this year. Of the total, 302,273 workers went to Saudi Arabia.

While Qatar recruited 51,849 Bangladeshi workers, Oman employed 50,637, Kuwait 25,637, Singapore 19,784 and Bahrain 16,470.

Sector insiders said if the trend continues, more than 1.0 million Bangladeshi will get overseas jobs this year.

However, the official figure showed that Bangladesh sent 372,895 and 244,239 workers abroad in the first half of 2016 and 2015 respectively.

After reopening of Saudi labour market for Bangladesh, the outflow of workers has been on the rise. The Gulf country reopened its market in August 2016.

The country also recruited a significant number of female workers in its housekeeping sector.

About 43,744 workers among total 64,769 were females, hired by Saudi Arabia in the January-June period of the current year.

Most out-bound women workers were engaged in housekeeping sector in the Middle East.

Although outflow of workers abroad increased, the inward remittances dropped substantially by 14.48 per cent or US$2.16 billion in the just-concluded fiscal year (FY).

The inward flow of remittances went down to US$12.77 billion in the FY 2016-17 from $14.93 billion a year back, the central bank statistics said.

Lower fuel oil prices in the global market have brought a negative impact on development activities in the Middle Eastern countries. So workers in many companies in the ME are not getting standard wages and benefits, officials said.

More than 10 million Bangladeshis went abroad since1976. Bangladesh has sent its workers to 160 countries. Of these, 20 are major ones.
