Dhaka, Colombo should utilise trade potentials: President

President Abdul Hamid said that Bangladesh and Sri Lanka should utilise huge potentials of bilateral trade and investment for mutual benefits.

"If we can explore the potentials of trade and investment of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka taking joint initiatives, both the countries will be benefited," the President said when his Sri Lankan counterpart Maithripala Sirisena met him at Bangabhaban on Friday evening, reports UNB.

Hamid said there are good potentials for the export of ceramics, vegetables, plastic and pharmaceutical products, electronic items, footwear, iron and steel from Bangladesh and both the countries may look into the possibility of widening the spectrum of tradable goods.

Welcoming Sirisena and his entourage, the President said Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have longstanding and historical relations and hoped that the both countries will continue their traditionally close cooperation for strengthening the socioeconomic development and emancipation of the people of the South Asian region.

He said the two countries as members of various regional and international organisations, including Saarc and Bimstec, share a commonality of views on many issues of mutual concern in all these forums.

Hamid hoped that Sri Lanka will increase its investment in readymade garment (RMG), textile, banking and service sectors in Bangladesh.

He said the two countries may explore other avenues of bilateral cooperation, including ICT, tourism, fisheries and agriculture, health, environment, natural disaster management and climate change.

Terming the visit of his Sri Lankan counterpart to Bangladesh a ‘milestone’, the President said it will definitely explore the multilateral relations between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

He also hoped that the current reconciliation of Sri Lanka will accelerate its overall development.

During the meeting, Sirisena said Sri Lanka always considers Bangladesh as a tested friend, hoping that the development and progress of Bangladesh will accelerate in the future.

Earlier, President Hamid welcomed the Sri Lankan President with a bouquet on his arrival at Bangabhaban at 7 pm.

Foreign Minister AH Mahood Ali, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, the secretaries concerned of Bangabhaban and Foreign Ministry were, among others, present.

President Hamid also hosted a cultural function followed by dinner at the Darbar Hall in honour of the visiting Sri Lankan President.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Chief Justice SK Sinha and Opposition Leader Raushon Ershad, among others, attended the dinner.
