Main work on RNPP to begin in September

The main work on the much-awaited Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) would start in September this year, Science and Technology Minister Architect Yeafesh Osman said on Thursday, reports BSS.

"Our honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will lay the foundation stone for the main construction work on Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in the middle of September this year," he told the Jatiya Sangsad while responding to a supplementary question from BNF member Abul Kalam Azad.

The minister said the first-phase of construction of the plant had already been completed. "Bangladesh would be the 33rd country having a nuclear power plant after construction of the Rooppur plant."

Giving details on Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, Osman informed the House that the power plant was scheduled to be built at Rooppur in northern Bangladesh in 1962.

But the then Pakistan government shifted it to Karachi, he said, adding, "After independence Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman felt the necessity to construct the plant at Rooppur.
