Growers expect good jute output in Rajshahi region

RAJSHAHI, July 11: Officials of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and farmers concerned of Bogra, Loypurhat, Pabna, Natore, Chapainawabganj, Naogaon, Sirajganj and Rajshahi districts are expecting better jute yield in the current season due to favourable weather condition and timely supply of necessary agri-imput. The plants are growing excellent now everywhere in the region including its vast Barind tract and some farmers of the region have started harvesting of the cash crop farming.

DAE is expecting some 13,96,795 quality bales of jute output from 129959 hectares of land in this season in all eight districts of Rajshahi division.

Standard quality seeds provided by Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC), easy term bank loan facility amid poor and marginal growers disbursed by Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) , timely supply of fertiliser and pesticides is boosting jute cultivation in the region from last few years, said farmer Hasanul Banna, 56, under Naogaon district.

In a recent visit the correspondent found prospective jute crops of around 7000 hectares land goes under water for sudden flood situation. The o-9897, GRO-524 and O-72 variety jute is gaining momentum in the area. The authority concern said, if the upstream begins recession within a week, the jute plant will not be affected massively. The farmers are taking preparation to harvest the crops across the region.

"The good day of the cash crops is returning back as the people of the country have started using the jute based commodities from last few year back." said sub-assistant of DAE Rajshahi region Abul Basar. He again said, "Along with government jute mills, several private jute mills have been playing important role preparing different jute product across the division for rendering bringing goods facilities."

"I made Tk 34000 from my 56 decimal of land last year as initial market price was Taka 1600 to 1700 per mound." said farmer Bimal Kumar,45, under Paba upazila of Rajsahai. This year he is expecting to make Tk 40,000 from 0.56 acre of land in this season.

Deputy Director Deb Dulal Dhali of DAE urged necessary steps are being ensured for making the farmers habituated in promoting high yielding jute varieties for boosting its production. The growers are also being taken forward with modern varieties and technologies relating to the jute cultivation and decomposition for their benefits in the present competitive era.

Commissioner of Rajshahi division Noor-Ur-Rahman said farmers got fair prices of jute during the last couple of years and as a result they are now eager to cultivate more jute. Eight to nine years back, the farmers lost their concentration to jute cultivation as they did not get fair prices of their produce, he added.
