Two BCL leaders suspended over RU journalist attack

The central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the ruling party-backed student organisation, suspended two of its leaders of Rajshahi University unit on Monday over attacking a journalist in front of the university gate.

The suspended leaders are - Mahmudur Rahman Kanon, information and research secretary, and Saiful Islam Bijoy, law secretary of BCL RU unit.

A letter in this regard signed by BCL central committee president Saifur Rahman Sohag was issued, reports UNB.

Witnesses said Bijoy, had an altercation with the supervisor of a bus of 'Desh Travels' in Comilla over fare. Centring the issue, some BCL leaders and activists started vandalising the bus in front of the university gate on Monday, they said.

As Arafat Rahman, RU Correspondent of an English daily, tried to take photo of the incident, the BCL men swooped on him and beat him up mercilessly, leaving him critically injured.

Later, he was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
