Persons with eroded image will not get nomination: Quader

JESSORE, July 10 (UNB): Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader warned on Monday his party colleagues that those have indulged in 'sick' politics and lost acceptability among people will not get nomination in the next general election, reports UNB.

"Don't indulge in infighting and sick politics. Our leader Sheikh Hasina is conducting surveys across the country in many ways. Only acceptable persons will get nomination based on opinions of the grassroots. Those who got their image dented and lost acceptability won't be considered for nomination," he said.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, came up with the remarks while speaking at the council of the district unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Jessore Eidgah ground.

He urged the BCL leaders to do politics of merits taking a strong stance against drug addiction, corruption, militancy, terrorism and extortion. "Don't give irregular students, non-students and drug addicts any place in Chhatra League committees."

The AL general secretary also asked the BCL leaders not to take much time in announcing the committee to include the competent people in it. "Announce Jessore (BCL) committee here. Incompetent people may get the room in the committee when it will be announced from Dhaka."

In an oblique reference to BNP's movement failure, Quader said there is a political party which could not take to the streets over the last eight years. "BNP's politics is limited to hollow warning and threats. The party used to say about launching a movement after Eid. Though around 17 Eids have elapsed so far, the party couldn't wage it."

Mentioning that BNP leaders and activists have got disappointed over the party's utter failure in movement, he said, "Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir often cries for his party leaders and activists. But, he has forgotten BNP's repressive acts during its rule."

The minister said hundreds of AL leaders and activists were killed, injured and tortured during BNP's rule in 2001-2006.

"Our many leaders, including Abdus Samad Azad, Matia Chowdhury, Mohammad Nasim, and me, were beaten in public. Sheikh Hasina's motorcade was attacked in Satkhira and we were obstructed from holding rallies. Did you forget all these things?," he asked Fakhrul.
