Call to ease loan facilities for women entrepreneurs

Two-day workshop concludes in city
FE Report

Speakers at a city workshop have called for easing soft loan facilities aimed at the country's growing number of women entrepreneurs.

The call was made on Sunday as a two-day workshop for developing women entrepreneurs ended in the capital city.

Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) in association with Trestle Group Foundation jointly organised the event titled "Empowering and Accelerating Women Entrepreneurs in Bangladesh."

DCCI President Abul Kasem Khan inaugurated the workshop the previous day while founder and chairperson of Dohatech New Media Limited Luna Shamsuddoha chaired the session.

The DCCI president in his speech said, "We have to involve women entrepreneurs in the mainstream of economic activities for the country's inclusive economic development."

He suggested that the government provide more incentives to the women entrepreneurs along with adequate training facilities.

Mr Khan said such kind of workshops and trainings would help motivate the women entrepreneurs.

He also urged the women entrepreneurs to diversify their products and concentrate on producing quality items.

Referring to some Bangladesh Bank statistics, he said a sum of Tk 53.45 billion in total was disbursed in 2016 as credit to the small and medium level women entrepreneurs and that it was in fact 3.77 per cent of the total credit disbursed in the country's SME (small and medium enterprises) sector.

According to him, women entrepreneurs sometimes face challenges in capital mobilisation, obtaining licences, assuring sustainable quality, management of human resources, audit and accounts etc.

Luna Shamsuddoha said if women entrepreneurs get easy access to loan, they will be able to empower and develop themselves.

Most of the country's women entrepreneurs belong to SME category and SME, she said, is the lifeblood of the economy.

"So for the sake of SME development, we need to take care of our women entrepreneurs," she stressed.

Ralph Schonenbach from Envoy World and Jeannettee Weidmann from Trestle Group conducted the workshop.

A total of 80 women entrepreneurs took part in the two-day workshop.

DCCI secretary AHM Rezaul Kabir later distributed certificates among the participants.
