Chinese firm to build solar plant at Kaptai

State-owned Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) inked a deal Sunday with Chinese ZTE Corporation to build a 7.4 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) grid-connected power generation plant near Kaptai of Rangamati hydropower station area.

The BPDB will purchase electricity from the plant at Tk 5.48 per kilowatt-hour (6.79 US cents) for 25 years.

The ZTE would complete construction of the plant by July 2018 as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor.

Electricity from this plant is expected to be supplied to the national power grid from August 2018.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide loan to complete the project worth Tk 738 million under the power system efficiency project.

Interest rate of the loan is LIBOR (London inter-bank offered rate) plus 0.60 per cent, which should be repaid with 20 years with five years grace period.

Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest at Bidyut Bhaban in the city, state minister for power, energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid underscored the need for clean energy initiatives.

He urged the country's private sector to come up with implementing clean energy projects alongside the government initiatives.
