Aman cultivation starts on 51,387 hectares of land in Pabna

PABNA, July 9: A total of 51,387 hectares of land have been brought under transplanted Aman cultivation in all nine upazilas of Pabna this year due to favourable whether condition in the region.

Farmers in nine upazilas of the district have been passing their busy times preparing seedbeds for transplanting seedlings of Aman paddy and  preparing their land where wood plough, tractor, power tiller, shallow tubewells and deep tube-wells are being used for irrigation.

To make the Aman cultivation a success, DAE Pabna provided training to the farmers. Upazila and district branches of Bangladesh Krishi Bank, many non-government organisations (NGOs) had distributed short-term loan among the farmers in the district.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office set a target to cultivate T-Aman paddy on 51,387 hectares of land in the district this year with a production target of 1,39,732 tonnes of paddy, sources said.

Besides, different state run commercial banks including Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) are disbursing agriculture loans on easy terms to the poor and marginal farmers to help them cultivating the paddy, said the RAKUB official here. In addition, the DAE has been conducting training for the farmers to help them adopt modern technologies of paddy cultivation, crop management and preservation of quality seeds, said additional deputy director (Training) of DAE.

Deputy Director (DD) of DAE Bibhuti Bhushon Sarkar, said more lands would be brought under cultivation as a good number of farmers living in char areas were cultivating the late varieties of paddies. The DD said availability of fertilisers, insecticides and other necessary agri-inputs had been ensured at the grassroots level.
