GOPALGANJ, July 9: Mango cultivation is comparatively more profitable than other crops. It proved Siru Molla, a mango farmers of Kashiani in Gopalganj. Recently he has profited Tk 2,50,000 from his mango production.

Md. Siru Molla (48), is son of late Md. Panchu Molla of village Char Padmabila under Kashiani upazila in Gopalganj district.

In the year of 2003 Siru started mango cultivation on 2.50 acres of land near his residence of Char Padmabila in Kashiani. He invested Tk above 0.1 million in the beginning of the year. He planted different origin of mangoes in his garden, like Amropali, Himsagar and Chandra Mollika etc. Now he increased his land on a large scale for cultivation in 16 bighas of land which he has taken lease from local land owners.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Gopalganj, a total of 590 hectares of land have been brought under mango cultivation with a production target of 4,606 tonnes (MT) in the district this year.

Siru cultivated above 300 maund of mango from his garden this year, of which market price was above Tk 0.5 million and his net profit was Tk 0.25 million from it.

There was bad weather and pest attack on his mango garden during blooming period this year. He gets above 300 maunds of mango from his garden.

A total of five labourers working in his garden and they get Tk 9,000 to Tk 12,000 each as salary. Many mango traders come here from many districts like Khulna, Bagerhat for purchasing mangos, every season. Siru sold his mangoes on average Tk 1,800 per maund this year.

Samir Kumar Goswami, Deputy Director (DD), Agriculture, Gopalganj told The F.E. that Siru Molla's hard work and enterprise crowned him with success. Not only that, he had already earned name and fame as a successful mango farmer in the district.

He said many villagers now follow him and come to him for advice on mango cultivation.
