Gulshan cafe attack suspect put in remand

Counterterrorism officers have been given seven days to quiz suspected terrorist Soheil Mahfuz over the foreigner-targeted attack on an upscale Dhaka restaurant last year.

Mahfuz, who the police say supplied the bombs used in the 2016 attack, was arrested on Saturday from the northern district of Chapainawaganj with three other suspected militants.

Police produced him before a Dhaka court on Sunday and pleaded for a 10-day remand in the anti-terrorism case filed over the attack that left 22 people killed.

The court of Metropolitan Magistrate KHN Twaha granted police seven days in custody.

Police have been looking for Mahfuz since the attack on the Holey Artisan Bakery and O' Kitchen restaurant in July last year.

Investigators say Mahfuz supplied the grenades. He is also a suspect in the 2014 blast in West Bengal's Burdwan town.

Mahfuz, who hails from the western district of Kushtia, used to go by the aliases Shahadat, Rimon, according to police.

He was an executive member of the JMB and joined neo-JMB about two years ago, according to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's counterterrorism unit.

A senior counterterrorism officer said Mahfuz had been in India from 2009 to 2014 using the alias Nasrullah and headed the JMB's West Bengal chapter.
