Frequent erosion devours 100 metres of dyke in Chowhali UZ under Sirajganj

SIRAJGANJ, July 8:  Around 100 metres long, under-construction flood protection embankment, at Khogener Ghat point area of Chowhali upazila under Sirajganj district has devoured with the fresh erosion.

The poor and feeble people of the adjacent villages are the worst sufferers due to the unexpected miseries condition of the dyke. Some of the family has started shifting their home based commodities to the safe place. To observe the real condition of the area deputy commissioner (DC) Kamrun Nahar of Sirajganj visited the devouring spot.

Top soil of the under-construction embankment was eroded due to the pressure of water, raising fears of further erosion, said Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Chowhali upazila Md Sadekur Rahman. He again said, "Tangail Water Development Board (WDB) has been informed of the matter and requested to start repair work."

Executive Engineer of Tangail water development board (WDB) Md. Shajahan Siraj said WDB engineers and workers have started dumping sandbags in the affected areas, adding that most of the affected areas of Chowhali upazila.

With 100 metres of the Khogenerghat area, some 50 metres of the embankment at Alia Madrasa point of the embankment was eroded on May 16 and total of 67 metres of the under-construction embankment in Jotpara area of Chowhali upazila were eroded on June 22.

To save the erosion-prone area, Tangail WDB started construction of the embankment from Nagarpur upazila in Tangail to Sirajganj's Chowhali upazila at a cost of Tk 1.09 billion in November 2014, and is scheduled to complete it by April 2018. If the noted area can be constructed rapidly, the people of the upazila will heave the breath of happiness.

Liakot Ali, vice-chairman of Chowhali Upazila Parishad, said use of poor construction materials and lack of monitoring has put the under-construction embankment at risk of erosion. Due to the fault in construction work, Chowhali flood protection embankment was damaged three times in a month, he added.
