Wheat growers of Magura unhappy over delay of procurement drive

Our Correspondent

MAGURA, June 20: Wheat growers of the district are disappointed due to delayed start of the wheat procurement drive.

Farmers' sources said harvest of the crop was completed in the area three months ago. But wheat procurement drive was started from June 01. Most of the marginal cultivators could not even able to supply wheat in the drive as they sold their entire crop to the traders.

Farmer Belayet Hossain of Jagdal village under Sadar upazila said he had completed harvest around three months ago. "I had waited for the procurement drive for one and a half of months. But as the drive was delayed I sold my produce in local market at Tk 20 per kg. Now government purchases the same amount of the crop at Tk 28", he said, adding, "I have got Tk 40,000 only by selling 50 maunds wheat in local market, while I would get Tk 56,000 if I could sell wheat during the drive"

District food office sources said wheat procurement drive has been started from June 01. The procurement target for the district is 2,854 tonnes.

District food controller Md Rezaul Islam said the drive was supposed to be started on April 18 last. "We could not start the drive in due time as the DAE did not submit the farmers' list on time", he added.
