Economic growth, security, political stability crucial

BRICS ministers resolve
Jubair Hasan from Beijing

Foreign ministers of BRICS countries vowed further strengthening of the platform of five economic powerhouses to ensure sustainable economic growth, security and political stability across the globe.

The ministers made the statement on Monday at the opening ceremony of a meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs and International Relations ahead of the upcoming 9th summit of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).

The summit meet of leaders of the member-countries of the emerging bloc will be held in the Chinese eastern port city of Xiamen in September.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, South African Foreign Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, Brazilian Foreign Minister Aloysio Nunes and India's Minister of State for External Affairs Vijay Kumar Singh attended the joint briefing held in Beijing.

Expressing their worries over possible reduction in investment in the combat against climate change, they also said the member-countries will work together and put their resources in dealing with the adverse impacts stemming from global warming owing to excessive carbon emissions.

To achieve the goal, they, at the same time, emphasised strengthening inter-trade activities, institutional capacities and mutual understanding among businesses, intelligence agencies and people.

Speaking at the briefing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said BRICS economies have been showing strong prospects over the last 10 years despite the sluggishness in the world economy as their share in global economy has increased from 12 per cent to 23 per cent during that period while they have contributed more than half of global growth.

He said trade and investment among the five countries increased sharply, and their cooperation expanded from economy to political fields and people-to-people exchanges.

"The BRICS countries have strengthened coordination within the UN and G20 framework to safeguard the interests of developing countries, and contributed wisdom to cope with global challenges," he said

Calling upon government of each country to work together in line with the Paris Agreement to combat the challenge of climate change, the Chinese foreign minister said the BRICS countries decided to enhance their efforts towards that goal.

Terming terrorism the worst global menace threatening global peace and stability, India's Minister of State for External Affairs Vijay Kumar Singh said the BRICS countries already reached a consensus on combined efforts to fight against the "common enemy of mankind".
