PABNA, June 19: Farmers of the district are expecting a bumper yield of cucumber, locally known as 'kheera', this year.

Many farmers in the district are opting for cucumber cultivation as its farming is more profitable than the other agricultural items.

Farmer sources said it rained several times after planting the cucumber seeds this year which is very good for the cultivation of the popular vegetable.

Due to favourable weather and timely supply of necessary agri-inputs, the farmers have achieved remarkable output of cucumber. As a result, a good number of them have become self-reliant and changed their lot through cultivating cucumber, one of the main ingredients of 'salad'.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said cucumber was cultivated on 1,105 hectares of land in the district this year.

Of the land, 150 hectares in Pabna sadar, 76 hectares in Ishwardi, 230 hectares in Atghoria, 123 hectares in Chatmohar, 70 hectares in Faridpur, 110 hectares in Bhangura, 135 hectares in Sujanagar, 75 hectares in Bera and 90 hectares in Santhia upazila.

"I have cultivated cucumber on 1.5 acres of land and expect a bumper production this year," said farmer Swapan Kumar Sarker, of Debottor village in Atghoria upazila.

"I planted the seeds in April this year and hopefully will be able to harvest the vegetable by the end of July," Swapan added.

Amirul Islam, a cucumber farmer at Ranigram village in Pabna sadar upazila, said, "I have spent Tk 8 thousand for cultivation of cucumber on 33 decimals of land and expect a profit of around Tk 40 thousand."

Eskub Ali of Sarabaria village under Atghoria upazila said, "I have cultivated cucumber on one bigha of my land and got 12 maunds of production worth about Tk 11,600 from the land."

Less production cost compared to the other crops is one of the main reasons behind the crop's popularity among growers, sources said.

Deputy director of DAE Bibhuti Bhuson Sarkar said the farmers were provided with adequate seeds and training to achieve the production target.
