Sunamganj administration demarcates area for sand collectors

Our Correspondent

SYLHET, June 19: With a view to ending the sufferings of sand collector boatmen, the Sunamganj district administration on Sunday demarcated certain area for the sand collection at Dolura area on the river Cholti in Sunamganj sadar upazila.

Senior officials from the Police and BGB were also present during the demarcation.  About 2000 labourers, locally known as 'Barki labour' who use small country boats for collecting sand from the riverbed had to suffer a lot due to lack of area demarcation for long.

Some organised gangs used to extract sand and stones from the riverbed illegally by using mechanised machines locally called 'Boma machine' for long. Such activities are totally barred in environment law. Also they had created trouble for the manual labourers and boa men, for extracting sand and stones.

Even the mobile courts from the district administration used to launch their drives to evict those illegal stone collectors. But, after days, the groups used to resume the illegal job, a number of locals alleged.

Now the trouble of the poor boat labourers would be ended, said officials and a number of labourers on Sunday.

Meanwhile, daylong publicity through loudspeakers was done on the Sharpin Tila area of Companiganj upazila in Sylhet with a view to freeing the hillock from the illegal occupants Sunday. The illegal occupants had been asked to clear the site in a day (by Monday).

Companiganj UNO Mohammad Abul Lais said yesterday failing to clear the area, the illegal occupants would be evicted soon from the government-owned hillock through special drives.

A mobile court led by executive magistrate Christopher Himel on Sunday awarded 2 months' jail to one Abdul Hamid for illegally extracting stones through digging from the Sharpin Tila.
