Broadband sans cable line gathering pace

It is time to start thinking about decommissioning the old copper telephone network, according to a global media report Monday.

By the end of this year, between 150,000 and 180,000 of Hull’s 210,000 buildings in UK will be using the city’s superfast fibre broadband network.

Most British households are now running seven to nine devices off their internet network and that fibre-optic cables are the only option.

Hull is the only city in the UK not to be a part of the national BT network and KCom, the local operator, has been investing heavily in fibre for the past five years.

If the city gets rid of its phone lines, it would follow in the footsteps of Svalbard, the Norwegian archipelago, and the Channel island of Jersey. Palaiseau, outside Paris, is also planning to ditch the old wires in 2018.

The move would be bad news for users of fax machines and burglar alarms that plug into the old network. Calls to the emergency services also still run on the copper network. But it would be a bold step into the future for Hull, which has proven that businesses and households are willing to pay for ultrafast broadband, even in a city which is the UK’s third most economically deprived.

Around half of businesses in the city are connected to KCom’s full-fibre network and about a third of households, compared with a quarter of households nationwide. KCom has started installing fibre straight into new-build homes, on the assumption that their future residents will want it.
