Jaguar Land Rover to hire 5,000 extra staff for UK industry

Jaguar Land Rover plans to hire extra 5,000 engineers and technical staff over the next 12 months in what will be seen as a major boost to the UK economy ahead of its departure from the European Union.

The recruitment drive, which could be announced this week, will see the country’s biggest automotive business – which produced 544,000 cars on its British production lines last year – increase its domestic workforce by almost 15per cent to 42,000.

JLR will be the latest big corporate name to signal it is beefing up its presence in the UK since last June’s Brexit vote, coming hot on the heels of Apple, Google and Facebook, all of which have declared significant investment in the last 12 months.

The Telegraph UK understands Coventry-based JLR is short of electronic and software engineers as the company races to keep up with increasingly complex systems such as self-driving “autonomous” vehicles and the growing importance of electric transmission systems.

Last year, Jaguar unveiled the I-Pace, its first battery-driven car, and it has a team competing in the Formula E electric racing series, a test bed for innovative technologies.

JLR has been at the forefront of Britain’s automotive renaissance over the past five years and last month the company posted record revenues of £24.3 billion, 9 per cent up on the previous year with global sales of 604,000 cars.

To find the staff it needs, the company is turning to digital technology, joining forces with the band Gorillaz and using their app to recruit tech-savvy staff.
