MAGURA: A three-day National Fruit Fair began at Khamarbari in Dhaka on Friday, showcasing different varieties of fruits including Brunei king and banana mango produced in Magura.

Brunei king is a variety of mango which is different from local varieties in size and taste. This mango weighing 4-5 kilograms originated from Brunei and was produced for the first time in Magura.

Credit goes to Atiar Rahman, a resident of Shatakhali village in Magura who collected sapling of Brunei mango from the mango orchard of the Brunei King. This mango is more juicy and delicious than those of common varieties.

Atiar Rahman told the FE that he planted Brunei mango sapling in the courtyard of his house in 2013. The tree produced two mangoes in 2014 while six in 2015, 11 in 2016 and 20 in the current year.

Meanwhile, Magura horticulture centre sources said they have achieved an outstanding success in producing banana mango for the first time in Magura. It looks like 'sagar kala'. This mango which originated from Thailand is very delicious compared to those of local varieties. Two saplings of this variety were planted at Magura horticulture in 2014 on an experimental basis. This year mangoes grew on the two trees. Banana mango can be preserved for a month without any chemical.

When contacted, horticulturist Aminul Islam told the FE that banana mango and Brunei king drew attraction of visitors at the National Fruit Fair.
