PM still abroad while country grappling with disaster: BNP

‘The govt fails in tackling hillslide aftermath’
A BNP senior leader said on Friday Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina has shown people the 'thump' by staying abroad even after hillslides devastated the country's four districts claiming a large number of lives, reports UNB.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi came up with the remarks while speaking at a human chain programme organised by Barkatullah Bulu Mukti Parishad in front of the National Press Club in the city, demanding BNP vice chairman Bulu's release from jail.

"It's regrettable that the Prime Minister has been on a pleasure trip to Europe when people in Rangamati are either dying or struggling to survive for lack of treatment, power and government support after the devastating landslides," the BNP leader said

He further said, "This is possible only when an anti-people government stays in power. Had she been the Prime Minister of people, she (Hasina) would not have been able to stay abroad showing people the thumb after a severe natural disaster in the country."

At least at 154 people, including army personnel and children, were killed in separate incidents of hillslides triggered by heavy rains in Bandarban, Chittagong, Rangamati and Cox's Bazar districts on Monday and Tuesday.

Speaking at another programme at the National Press Club arranged by Democratic Movement, BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said the government showed inefficiency in tackling the natural disaster in Rangamati and Bandarban.

"The government should have remained alert with effective steps to face natural calamity in the hilly areas as downpour triggers landslides there during monsoon. We've seen the government showed poor performance in tackling the situation and standing people with necessary support," he said.

Khasru also said the country's people are becoming victims to disasters one after another for lack of modern disaster preparedness and the government's accountability.
