Value added tax

The DHAKA WASA collects Tk 8.09 per cubic litre of water for domestic consumers along with a similar amount against sewerage connection. This is in addition to 15 per cent of the amount charged as VAT which means a total payment of Tk18.60 per unit of water supply. In case of commercial consumers this amount is Tk 61.96 per unit. The current rate of WASA has been effective from November '16 which is Tk 23.00 for each unit of water in case of domestic consumers and Tk 73.60 for commercial consumers with 15 per cent VAT as before. This is difficult to accept considering the present cost of living.

In my area where I live, that is New Eskaton, water crisis is perpetual and has been continuing for decades as more consumers are being added with construction of more buildings. Many buildings are about to be completed. Some have sunk individual deep tube wells of their own. Most of the buildings are to suck WASA water using suction pumps involving additional cost of electricity. When we are about to be among middle income group of countries, we cannot accept such a situation. Let the LGRD authority make a future plan while the VAT realised being high enough should be reasonably reduced.
