Raw cotton import jumps by 12.73 pc in 10 months

Import of the raw cotton from the rest of the world increased by 12.73 per cent during the first 10 months of the current fiscal year.

Statistics available with Bangladesh Bank revealed that the value of raw cotton import stood at $2.07 billion in July-April period of FY17 while it was $1.83 billion in the same period of FY16.

Central bank statistics also showed that the annual import of raw cotton was $2.15 billion in the past fiscal year.

Global cotton price started to soar in October last and continued up to April this year.

More than 95 per cent of the local demand is met by the import of cotton from India, CIS countries, African countries and the United States.
