Rights groups demand wage, bonus for workers by 22nd Ramadan

FE Report

Rights groups on Thursday demanded festival allowance and wage for the month of June by Ramadan 22 for the workers of the country's garment sector and shops, hotels and restaurants.

National Garment Workers Federation (NGWF) and National Shop Employees Federation (NSEF) made the demands at a press conference held at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the city.

NGWF president Amirul Haque Amin said there is no chance of escape from payment of festival allowance for the workers of all sectors including garment and shops as the provision for paying festival allowance has been incorporated in the rules on labour law.

But there are some garment factories where crisis arises ahead of Eid over the monthly payment and festival allowance on lame excuse, he alleged.

He also called on the government, law enforcement agencies and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) to ensure that workers get monthly wage and festival allowance.

Earlier, the BGMEA leaders at the 34th meeting on 'Crisis Management Core Committee on RMG Sector' assured that garment workers would get festival allowance by Ramadan 20.

Responding to that, Mr Amin said there has not been much progress in payment of wage and festival allowance while many garment owners opined that they need more time in this regard.

He claimed that only 25-30 per cent garment factories paid festival allowance till Thursday.

There are 6.0 million employees in some 10 categories of shops including shop, shopping mall, chain shop, departmental store, retail shop, wholesale, electric, saloon, beauty parlour and medicine, he said.

They work more than regular working hours, he said, adding that a large number of such workers cannot celebrate Eid with their families.

He also demanded one-month salary as festival allowance and payment of festival allowance and monthly wage for June by Sunday for the garment and shop workers across the country.

NSEF president Rafiqul Islam, among other labour leaders, was present at the press conference.
