NATORE, June 15:  Blackberry cultivators of Natore and Pabna districts in Rajshahi division are expecting to make around Tk 70 million profit this season.

Local source said farmers of Ishwardi, Dasuria, Rajapur, Muladuly, Lalpur, Shingra, Natore Sadar and Gopalpur unions of the two districts have started selling the juicy fruit to the wholesalers coming from different districts including Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet.

Present retail price of the fruit is at Tk 50 to Tk 60 per kg while it is being sold at Tk 40 to Tk 50 in the wholesale markets in the areas.

The brisk business of the fruit has been going on in the makeshift wholesale markets on both sides of the Rajshahi-Pabna and Shingra-Rajshahi Highway and other kitchen markets from the first week of June, said fruit trader Aminur Rahman of Muladul Bazar of Pabna.

Farmer Fayez Uddin of Natore district said cultivation of the fruit expands every season as it is proved more profitable to the growers. He said he has planted five saplings of berry five years ago spending Tk 1200. The trees have begun to bear fruit from the last year. He expects to harvest five maunds of berry this season if the weather condition remains favourable till the last week of the current month.

Deputy Director of DAE, Pabna, Bibhuti Bhushon Sarker said berry plays a vital role to uplift the economic condition in the rural areas. "We are inspiring the root-level growers to grow the popular fruit in more areas", he added.
