Capital sees downpour, water-logging

Commuters suffer
FE Report

The capital experienced a spell of downpour on Wednesday evening, which caused water-logging on the roads in many low-lying areas and disrupted vehicular movements.

Many major areas, including Motijheel, Shantinagar, Bijoynagar, Bailey Road, Elephant Road and Khilgaon, went under knee-deep water due to the downpour that continued for hours.

The commuters, especially working people and shoppers, faced immense sufferings to avail transports to return home, as many roads were flooded with water and vehicles were stuck in gridlock.

Home-goers got stranded at their working places and shopping malls. Rickshaw-pullers and auto-rickshaw drivers charged exorbitant fares from the passengers.

The city dwellers feared that if such downpour occurs on a regular basis throughout the rainy season, they will have to face more sufferings, as water-logging has been an acute problem in the capital.

Since many city roads and low-lying areas experienced water-logging on Wednesday, the situation might worsen further if the intensity of rainfall increases during the rainy season, according to them.

Met Office recorded the highest rainfall of 153 mm in Sylhet division, and 34 mm in the capital from 6.00 am to 6:00 pm on the day. It also forecasted that heavy shower is expected in different parts of Chittagong, Sylhet and Barisal divisions today (Thursday)
