UN Women representative meets Speaker

Christin Hunter, the outgoing country representative (resident) of United Nations (UN) Women Bangladesh, on Wednesday made a farewell call on Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at her parliament office.

During the meeting, issues relating to women empowerment, socio-economic development, activities of parliament, social security and labour right in Bangladesh were discussed, said a press release.

The speaker said Bangladesh has been upgraded from a low income country (LIC) to a lower-middle income country (LMIC).

"The government is working relentlessly to upgrade the country to a middle-income one by 2021," she added.

Referring to the women empowerment in Bangladesh, Dr Chaudhury said the government is proceeding towards the economic development giving priority to the women empowerment.

The UN Women representative lauded the massive development in various sectors in Bangladesh, especially in women empowerment.
