Incessant rainfall paralyses civic life in Sylhet

Our Correspondent

SYLHET, June 14: Sylhet region experienced excessive rainfall during the last two days paralysing the civic life.

The rain has caused severe water stagnancy in some low lying areas of the city and around.  Life in the city was badly hit as many houses and shops were submerged and roads gone under water.

Sylhet regional met office's in-charge Sayeed Ahmed Chowdhury said, 'We experienced the season's highest rainfall 152 mm in only nine hours till 3:00 pm on Wednesday. Besides, 87 mm rainfall was recorded in three hours till 3.00pm on the same day. The trend will continue for another day".

City peoples' movement was suffered badly while many could not come out of their houses due to continued downpour. Plying of vehicles on the streets also suffered while Eid shoppers bored the extreme.

Areas like Zindabazar, Bandarbazar, Electric Supply Road, Naiorpul, Mirzajangal, Monipuri Rajbari,  Loharpara, Hawapara, Darga mohalla, Sonarpara, Tantipara, Sagardighirpar, Mirzajangal, Bagbari, Pathantola, Rainagar, Jatarpur, Taltola, Bhatalia, Bilopar, Barobazar, Khasdobir, Uposhahar, Teroratan, Masimpur, Bharthokhola, Meni-khola and Pathanpara etc were inundated.

A number of city dwellers claimed the water stagnancy takes place in Sylhet mainly due to the grabbing of major parts of the nine natural streams in the city areas by the influentials. A massive amount of money was spent in the last few years to clear those, but the success was poor, said Shamsul Haque, a trader in the city's Ambarkhana area.

Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury visited some of the inundated areas. He said, "The rainwater that remains in the low-lying areas would recede within hours after the rain stops. Mainly it happened due to the drains being blocked with wastages. We would soon do some works to resolving the problem in some areas."
