CHAPAINAWABGANJ, June 14: A good number of dairy farms have been set up in the eight districts of Rajshahi division during the last few years.

Rajshahi divisional office of Livestock Department sources said initiatives from different private and government organisations have helped to set up hundreds of small and large dairy farms in the region.

Sources said the farms are playing an important role reducing unemployment in the rural areas. Thousands of people of the draught-prone area have attained financial solvency and improved their socio-economic condition through the dairy farms.

"I have bought five cows at a cost of Tk 2,50,000 last year. I get 25 kgs of milk everyday", said Hossain Ali of Chapainawabganj district. He further said per kg of milk is being sold at Tk 40 to Tk 50 in the retail market.

Dairy farms and milk processing units have been contributing a lot in upgrading the regional economic conditions", said farmer Nazrul Islam of Dawkola village under Sadar upazila.

"The northwestern eight districts have an enormous prospect of expanding the livestock sector through best uses of the existing natural resources", said Prof Dr Jalal Uddin of Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science of Rajshahi University.
